Have you ever wondered you could make a call to someone from your own mobile handset using someone else’s number? If not then Call spoofing is an answer to your question. Call spoofing is the ability to spoof caller ID and SMS messages. One can change what someone sees on their call display when they receive a phone call to anything they want. This is characteristically referred to as "Caller ID Spoofing" or "Call Display Spoofing".

One can show any phone number they wish on call display, basically faking your caller ID. You can change your voice to male/female, record the conversation, spoof SMS text messages. One can indulge in such faking and yet roam about like a free bird as this facility PROTECTS ONES PRIVACY by not showing the real number on caller ID.Caller ID Spoofing is the practice of causing the network to show a number on the recipient's caller ID display which is not that of the actual originating station. It is a method adopted by people with malicious intent to harass people. It is similar to e-mail spoofing which makes it feasible for the sender to choose any e-mail id to send fake e-mails; caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to have come from any phone number the caller wishes. Because of the high trust people tend to have in the caller ID system, spoofing can call the system's value into question.

“I recently got missed calls for almost 3 consecutive days on my mobile phone from a vague number (a call made from the internet) at 3 am in the morning. I called up the Vodafone Customer care service to find out who the caller was. But they said they do not keep a track of missed call records”, said Mr. Vijay Mukhi, Member, High Court/State Government Committee on Pornography and Cyber Laws. “There is no point lodging a complaint as there will be no solution to this problem.” Mukhi added.

The first mainstream Caller ID spoofing service was Star38.com. It was launched in September 2004. Star38.com was the first service to allow spoofed calls to be placed from a web interface. It stopped offering service in 2005, as a handful of similar sites were launched. There are various websites available which provide free spoofing facilities like www.crazycall.net , http://www.spooftel.com/ etc.

Frequently, caller ID spoofing is used for prank calls. For example, someone might call a friend and arrange for "The White House" to appear on the recipient's caller display. In December 2007, a hacker used a caller id spoofing service and was arrested for sending a SWAT team to a house of an unsuspecting victim.

When AV asked why it doesn’t make sense lodging a complaint with police, he said, “The mobile service providers so not maintain a track of the calls. We pay them charges for Caller ID but they do not provide us caller details in return. Even if the Police questions the Companies about the call log sheets, they would decline saying they do not maintain one” said Mukhi. “However the missed call log on my mobile phone will be a prima-facie evidence for the police to arrest the call” he added. When asked what measures can be taken to curb such malicious deeds, Mukhi said, “The web provides calling services free of charge or at nominal rates. Mobile phone and landline prove expensive media for making International calls. People rely on the internet to make calls. Which is call spoofing websites are thriving.”

On asked how the police could tackle such a menace, Mukhi said, “Unless and until the mobile phone service providers start maintaining call log sheets, this problem is bound to exist. It is a helpless situation as with little or no evidence no action can be taken. The culprit indulging in call spoofing can get away with it.”

“The mobile service providers do not want to spend money to maintain call log details” Mukhi added.

The accusation on Paris Hilton in August, 2006 for using caller ID spoofing to break into a voicemail system that used caller ID for authentication is a classic example in this case.

AV (http://www.aftervoice.com/) contacted some of the Law keepers in the city to find out about call spoofing.

DCP (Zone 10) Prakash Muthyal said, “I have not come across such cases as yet. The Cyber Crime Cell might be able to give some inputs.”

DCP (Zone 4) SD Baviskar said, “ I have not heard of anything called call spoofing till date.”

DCP( Zone 11) Sharda Nigam said, “ Cases for call spoofing have never been registered with us. However I shall find out from our technical team about this.”

Ex- Commissioner of Police Hasan Gafoor said, “The Telecom Department will be able to give you a better picture of call spoofing. I would not be able to comment anything bout it.”

Google SMS Channels is a service that enables channels/groups on SMS. It’s a free service that enables you to get premium content published by Google publishing partners, Google popular products (Google News, Blogger and Google Groups) and websites with RSS/Atom support for free. SMS Channels allows you to create your own channel(s) to publish content that other users can subscribe to. You can also create groups over SMS to communicate with your friends, family, and co-workers.

How do I use Google SMS Channels?

                                   

                                 You can use the service by going to the Google SMS Channels site or via your mobile phone. On the web you can sign up using your Google account. You’ll need to input your phone number while signing up. We’ll send a verification code via SMS to your phone. You’ll need to input the verification code you received to complete the sign up process. This service is currently available to users in India and requires an Indian mobile number.

Depending on your service provider, you may or may not receive messages if you are on International roaming. All mobile numbers are treated with the highest confidentiality and are not displayed to anyone. So it is very safe to post messages via my mobile.

You can set your nickname while signing up for the service. Your nickname will appear in the invite SMS. You can go to the ‘Settings’ page to change your nickname at any time.

When you post a message to your channel, all the members of your channel get the message forwarded for free. SMS tariff charges may apply when you configure the service or publish to a channel using a mobile phone. You will be charged the standard tariff charged by your mobile operator when you send a message. The message is treated as a single message even though your message might be reaching multiple users.

How to Register for Google SMS Channel

On SMS you can just send REGISTER to 9870807070 to sign up for the service. You will receive a reply ‘You’ve accepted the Terms of Service at http://labs.google.co.in/smschannels/termsofuse. To subscribe, reply ON channel name. eg. ON GoogleNews. For more commands reply HELP’

The website as well as SMS commands on the phone allow you to configure settings, create and subscribe to channels and even view past messages on a channel.

Verification Code

You need to verify your phone number while signing up with SMS Channels service from the web front end. After you sign in to the SMS Channel web front end using your Google account, Google will send you the verification code via SMS to the phone number you have entered. You’ll need to type in the verification code on our web front end to complete the sign up process. Usually it takes few minutes to receive the verification code. However, network delays may cause the verification code to be delivered at a later time.

Search for a Channel

          

                               To find a channel, you can either browse or search for channels on the Browse channels page. When browsing, you can narrow the list by selecting a category, or sort the channels by Most users (default), Recent channels and Recent posts. To search on the website, enter your keyword in the search box on the Browse channels page and click ‘Search’.

To search using your phone, SMS ‘SEARCH ‘ to 9870807070. For example, send the following SMS to 9870807070 to search for channels that contain the keywords ‘Technology Updates’ in channel’s title or description: SEARCH Technology Updates .You’ll be sent up to 3 channels matching your keyword(s) over SMS. To see more channels, you can reply ‘MORE ‘.

How do I subscribe to a channel?

To subscribe to a channel, click the ‘Subscribe’ button below the channel description on the Browse channels page or on the Channels detail page. You can also click the ‘Accept invitation’ button below the channel description to subscribe to a channel that you’ve been invited to.

To subscribe using your phone, SMS ‘ON ‘ to 9870807070. is the name of the channel. For example, if you wanted to subscribe to the TECKUPDATE channel, you will need to send the following SMS to 9870807070: ON TECKUPDATE

You’ll receive a confirmation message and the last message posted on the channel to confirm your subscription.

How do I find out channels that I have subscribed to?

Go to the My Channels tab. This tab lists three kinds of channels:
a) Invited – the channels you’ve been invited to join by other members.
b) Created – the channels you created.
c) Subscribed – the channels that you have subscribed to.

JUST FOLLOW SIMPLE STEPS

1.           Create any new folder or you can use any existing folder that is to be hidden.

2.           Rename the folder to any name but with the extension of .jad like if I want to hide my images folder then I will name it as IMG.jad

3.           Now create a new folder with the same name in the same directory but with the extension of.jar So, I would create the folder with the name IMG.jar

4.           And thats it!! My orignal images folder which has been renamed with .jad gets hidden and only folder with.jar extension is visible which is empty.So,my data is protected/hidden from unwanted eyes.

To unhide the orignal folder you have to remove the .jar extension from the new folder and your orignal folder with all the files and with .jad will become visible.

Consumer Broadband Test

The Consumer Broadband Test is an Internet speed test setup by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at Broadband.gov.

I suppose you could call this broadband test the "official" US Internet speed test but that would be a bit of a stretch. The Consumer Broadband Test is just hosted by the FCC. Bandwidth testing is actually performed, randomly I might add, by either Ookla (see the last entry in this list) or M-Lab.

While it's not clear in the information provided by the FCC, I'm assuming the closest possible server is chosen automatically for the speed test.

Speakeasy Speed Test

Speakeasy's bandwidth test lets test your Internet speed back and forth from a short list of server locations that you can choose manually.

Speakeasy might be to your liking then if you're interested for some reason in testing your Internet speed between yourself and a specific area of the US verses the closest server possible.

Ookla provides the engine and servers for Speakeasy, making it very similar to Speedtest.net, but I've included it here due to its popularity.

Bandwidth Place is yet another Internet speed test option. It's unclear if there are multiple servers in use to help give you more accurate results but I'd guess there's only one.

I wouldn't use Bandwidth Place as my only test but it might be a good choice if you'd like to confirm results you're getting with a better service like Speedtest.net or Speakeasy.

AuditMyPC.com Speed Test

Another good Internet speed test site is this one hosted at AuditMyPC.com. While there are no multiple server locations to choose from, the test is quick and the results very easy to read.

The CNET Bandwidth Meter Online Speed Test is an Internet speed test that functions like most others.

Ookla and Internet Speed Test Sites

Ookla has a kind of monopoly on Internet speed testing, probably because they've made it so easy to use their technology on other sites. If you look carefully at a lot of Internet speed test sites you find in search engine results, you might notice that ubiquitous Ookla logo.

Many of these Ookla-powered bandwidth tests are essentially identically, meaning you're better off sticking with Ooka's own Speedtest.net.

Some of these speed tests however, like some of the ISP-hosted tests above, are powered by Ookla's excellent software but use their own server as testing points. In those cases, especially when testing your Internet speed against what you're paying for, those tests are better bets than Speedtest.net.
